Blessing from the Lubavitcher Rebbe on the Alter Rebbe's Yahrzeit

Letter from the Admo"r Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson of Lubavitch to the avreich Avraham Tzvi Sh. concerning blessings and practical advice for successful studies in yeshivah. 24 Tevet 1982. Brooklyn, New York.

The letter before us was written on the very day of the Alter Rebbe's yahrtzeit, 24 Tevet, a day that, according to Chassidic doctrine, is a segulah for connection with the soul of the tzaddik who passed away that day. The ancient source for this custom is mentioned already in Rash"i's commentary (Tractate Yevamot, page 122a) "And in Teshuvot HaGeonim I found ... the day on which a great person passed away is set aside in his honor. Each year, on that day, Torah scholars gather from all around and go to his grave along with the rest of the people." The most well-known yahrtzeit celebration is the one that takes place on Lag BaOmer in memory of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai. The Chassidic movement extends special significance to yahrtzeits of tzaddikim. It is a day that the Chassidim traditionally do not recite Tachanun, and conduct formal meals and farbrengins like a Yom Tov.

The Rebbe opens this letter with a promise that "at an auspicious time" he will read the request for a blessing at the grave site. After this, the Rebbe determines an important matter: It is not worthwhile to change yeshivahs if the young man is successful where he is currently (apparently, even though there is a better yeshivah), especially in the middle of the academic year. And apparently, in honor of the yahrtzeit, which as known, in Chaba"d, is a day of increased study of the person with the yahrtzeit's Torah thoughts, the Rebbe ends his letter with a reminder of the importance of the study of Chata"t, and a request to continue this practice in any case from that day on.

The Admo"r Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson [1902-1994], seventh in the dynasty of the Admo"rs of Lubavitch, started serving as Admo"r in 1951 and continued until his passing. He was a tremendous gaon in all aspects of the Torah. His net was - and still is - cast across the entire world.

[1] leaf paper, approximately 14x22 cm. Typewritten, signed by the Rebbe.

Fine condition: Fold marks. Tiny tears in the folds, without damage or lack to the text.
