Rare - Share in The Kosher Meat Supply Association of London, Bought and with the Signature of Lord Samuel Montagu. London, 1874
Share issued by The Kosher Meat Supply Association (T.K.M.S.A.L). The share was bought by Lord Samuel Montagu, the first Baron of Swaythling, who was one of the leaders of London Orthodox Jewry in those days, and one of those who led the battle against Reform there. (Montagu's name appears as buyer of the share, and he also signs as one of the two directors of the company.)
Samuel Montagu, the first Baron of Swaythling, 1832-1911, was a successful banker who became wealthy at a young age. He was appointed a judge advocate in London and served as a member of the British Parliament. Over the years, he became a baron and even a lord. He was known for his strong stance against the Reform and was very active in efforts to remove the Reform from London Jewry's community institutions. He cooperated with Baron Rothschild in 1875 to establish the Beit Sefer L'Omanut in Jerusalem, and served as treasurer of the London committee for Jewish refugees from Russia. His daughter Lillian Montagu was a thinker and one of the founders of Liberal Judaism in England.
