Poster. First Publication Opposing Television. Brooklyn, NY.
"Kol Korei L'Teshuva", opposing television viewing, issued by the Central Rabbinical Congress. Brooklyn, [1955]
[1] large leaf, 55x40 cm. Thick paper. Hebrew and Yiddish.
The poster states: 'It defiles all its users…where one sees what is heard…'. It was issued about a year after the invention of the television and is dated the 14th of Elul, 1955. This is apparently the first declaration by American rabbis opposing the television. It was signed by about 150 rabbis, headed by Rabbi Yoel Teitelbaum of Satmar, president. Rabbi Yonatan Steif and Rabbi Yehoshua Chaim Teitelbaum were vice presidents of the organization. The bottom of the leaf bears a request that the poster be displayed in all public places in Brooklyn. Rare.
Light tears. Fine condition.
