A Decree and Excommunication Against Studying External Wisdom Until the Coming of the Redeemer - A Poster Signed by Maharil Diskin and Other Signatories. Jerusalem, Early 20th Century

'Elot HaBrit' - A poster forbidding the study of external wisdom, learning foreign works and languages while imposing excommunications and curses on the founders of such places of study and those who teach in them. Signed in print with the signature of Maharil Diskin, Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld, the Rebbe Rabbi Eliezer Menachem Biderman and other signatories.

The especially strongly worded poster calls to forbid the Ashkenazi community from engaging in any type of external studies: "The Ashkenazim who dwell in the Holy City of Jerusalem and all of its environs" but also includes the Sephardi community who "will probably see it from him and do so". The poster comes to reinforce previous excommunications on this matter from 1860 and 1872. "To forbid studying foreign works and languages which should not be taught in a group in any place whatsoever, not in school alone and not to add them to the Talmudei Torah, even if they are of extremely secondary importance even by a God-fearing Mashgiach...it is forbidden even if only three people study together...and even to study alone from a special person, even for a short time and even for one day..." The congregation of immigrants to the Holy Land until the coming of the Redeemer is included in these prohibitions: "And one who immigrates to dwell in the Holy Land until the time our redeemer arrives, and any explanation and doubt which could arise in the interpretation of these decrees, is always to be more stringent and not more lenient..."

The Rabbis who signed the poster decreed in sharp language that one who transgresses this decree will be excommunicated: "And one who transgresses these matter and does all of this is excommunicated and isolated from the congregation of Israel and we must pursue and repel him as much as possible..."
