Jerusalem Sectoral Strife: Rare Polemic Letter from the Admo"r Rabbi Ze'ev of Rachmastrivka

"It is not my way to become involved in disputes between sects and disagreements ... I made a mistake ... and I was unable to sleep at night ..."

Unique and rare sacred letter, entirely handwritten and signed by the renowned Admo"r Rabbi Ze'ev Twerski of Rachmastrivka, son and successor of the founder of the dynasty, Rabbi Yochan'che of Rachmastrivka, about Riv HaKitot in Jerusalem. [Jerusalem, post-1934].

This letter was sent to Rabbi Shmuel Aharon Webber [-Shazuri], secretary of the chief rabbinate. The content of the letter demonstrates that there were those who sent Rabbi Shazuri to obtain the Rachmastrivka Rebbe's signature on a specific poster related to a dispute between various groups in Jerusalem, possibly the famous dispute in Jerusalem between the Edah HaChareidit, led by the gaon Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld, and the chief rabbinate, led by Rabbi Kook.

After the messengers left, the Rachmastrivka Rebbe regretted signing the poster, and he requests in this letter to retract it (as it was not the way of the tzaddikim of Chernobyl-Rachmastrivka to get involved in disputes and express their opinions about them). The Rebbe requests that Rabbi Shazuri pull his signature, "from both pieces of paper" and send them back with the person carrying this letter in a closed envelope "before what was done becomes public ; it is against my will and I regret it ... as it is not my way to become involved in disputes between sects and disagreements. I made a mistake by signing and I was unable to sleep at night ..."  He also adds, "And you have many rabbis besides me, and it can always be achieved through others." The rebbe then writes, "And if [you] want to know my opinion - speak to me face to face." At the end of the letter, the rebbe recommends, "The two sects can be united in a way that will not affect the livelihood nor the honor of certain people, they certainly have great power to raise religion aloft and to strengthen it and also their livelihood ..."

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for a brief biography of the Admo"r Rabbi Ze'ev Twerski of Rachmastrivka.
