Drush V'Chiddush by Rabbi Akiva Eiger. Warsaw, 1839. First Edition

Drush V'Chiddush on Talmudic topics by the rabbi of the entire Jewish people, the gaon Rabbi Akiva Eiger. Among the most famous in-depth scholarly works, the epitome of scholarly genius, it has since been printed in dozens of editions. Warsaw, 1839. First edition of this fundamental sefer. Rabbinic stamp.

This sefer was printed by the author's sons less than two years after Rabbi Akiva Eiger's passing. The calculation of the year of print is made from the words משמת רבי עקיבא... In the important foreword, the author's sons write about their great father's study and innovation method. Written on the title page: "Second Sefer" - but it is actually the first part, and the intent here is that it is second with respect to Rabbi Akiva Eiger's book of responsa, which was printed four years earlier.

Drush V'Chiddush is known for its sharpness and the scholarly questions discussed with astounding logic. Its kushiyot became a byword in yeshivah study halls and constitute a thought-challenge for the best of scholars. The gaon Rabbi Akiva Eiger even "catagorizes" the level of difficulty of his kushiyot in the midst of discussing them: the conclusion "וצ"ע" - וצריך עיון refers to an unresolved kushyah; the conclusion "וצע"ג" - וצריך עיון גדול - refers to tremendous astonishment, something extraordinary. When he adds a concluding remark such as "וה' יאיר עיני" - this indicates that the question is considered unresolvable.

After about only forty years from the first publication of Drush V'Chiddush, Rabbi Akiva Eiger's kushiyot spread throughout batei midrash and became a source for Torah compositions that revolved around resolving these questions. Rabbi Yissachar Dov of Lubranitz published his sefer, Chazut Kashot, "with the purpose of resolving over a thousand kushiyot on Sha"s from our sacred rabbi ... the wonder of the generation, the glory of the Jewish people ... Akiva Eiger, in his sefer, Chiddush V'Drush."
