Historic Photograph: Cornerstone Laying for the Novardok Yeshivah. Mezeritch, C. 1920

Large photograph from the festive cornerstone laying ceremony of Yeshivat Beit Yosef-Novardok in Mezeritch. The photograph apparently depicts the yeshivah rabbis and dignitaries of the Mezeritch community. Early 1920s. Numbers appear next to several of the people in the photo, but details of the names of the people photographed are not included.

Yiddish inscription (partially lacking) at the top of the cardboard on which the photograph is pasted. Free translation: "Cornerstone laying for the new yeshivah building in Mezeritch."

Geonei olam led the Novardok yeshivah, among the leaders of the pre-Holocaust yeshivah world in Europe. The rosh yeshivah was the gaon Rabbi David Bilicher, primary disciple of the Alter of Novardok. Additional rabbis who served the yeshivah include Rabbi Yosef David Bauersky, Rabbi Shmuel Panitch, Rabbi Shmuel Narovler, Rabbi Aharon Weinstein - author of Darkei Aharon, and others.

The Novardok yeshivah in Mezeritch was one of the prominent mussar yeshivahs, and another close to twenty smaller yeshivahs in surrounding towns were under its influence. For more about this yeshivah, refer to Lapid Esh Novardoka'i (Jerusalem, 1993), pp. 64-68; Mezeritch - Sefer Kehillah (1978), pp. 241-242.

Photograph size: Approximately 24.5x18 cm. Including the original cardboard onto which it was pasted: 29.5x23.5 cm.

Condition of the photograph: Moderate-fine, slight blemishes and wear in the edges of the photograph. The cardboard has many lacks. The top of the cardboard (with the text) is detached.
