Proclamation Signed by Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaKohen Kook Against Holding Soccer Matches on Shabbat
A proclamation issued by the Chief Rabbinate of Eretz Yisrael, signed in print by Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaKohen Kook and Rabbi Yaakov Meir, opposing soccer games on Shabbat, declaring it a public desecration of Shabbat. Tamuz 5691 (1931).
"We hereby inform you that according to the holy Torah, there is absolutely no justification for playing soccer on Shabbat and Yom Tov. All the suggestions and arguments raised on this matter do not in any way annul the prohibition… Therefore, do not play soccer on Shabbat and Yom Tov, and you shall be a blessing in the Land of Israel."
