Sefer "Sha'arei Tzedek" – On Mitzvot Dependent on the Land – By the Author of Chayei Adam – Jerusalem, 1864
On the title page: "Printed in the great and excellent press newly established in the holy city of Jerusalem", referring to the printing press of Yechiel Brill, Michal HaCohen, and Yoel Moshe Salomon. This press was founded in 1862 as a lithographic press, later transitioning to regular printing machines, which led to a major conflict with the renowned printer Israel Bak.
Both parties printed rival newspapers (HaLevanon and HaChavatzelet), and due to informing to the Ottoman authorities about "forbidden content, " the government in Constantinople ordered the closure of the newspapers' operations. In practice, the governor of Jerusalem shut down both printing presses entirely. Only after extensive lobbying and bribing corrupt officials, they were eventually permitted to reopen their presses.
Sh. Halevi, Sifrei Yerushalayim 104.
