Me’il Tzedakah, by Rabbi Yonah Landsofer. Prague, 1757 (תקי"ז). First edition. With rabbinic ownership inscriptions
Sefer Me’il Tzedakah – Responsa by Rabbi Yonah Landsofer, with a geometry appendix and diagrams. Prague, 1756 (תקי"ז). First edition.

This is the first printing of this rare halachic and scientific work by Rabbi Yonah Landsofer, a hidden tzaddik of Prague, known for his mastery of both Torah and secular sciences, especially geometry. The book includes detailed responsa on various halachic topics, many accompanied by geometric diagrams for clarity.

At the end of the book appears a fascinating appendix, titled:
"Kuntres… melukat min sifrei Euclides u’Chaverav, betzorech gadol leTorateinu b’kamah mekomot" – a treatise gathered from the works of Euclid and others, demonstrating how geometry is relevant to halacha. This rare feature, with intricate geometrical sketches (triangles, angles, etc.), precedes even the printing of Euclid in Hebrew by the Vilna Gaon’s disciple R. Baruch Schick (Amsterdam, 1780).

Although the author omits his name on the title page, the endorsements (haskamot) — including one from the famed Noda BiYehuda, Rabbi Yechezkel Landau — clearly identify him as Rabbi Yonah Landsofer, also known for his Ketzot HaChoshen.

Provenance: The flyleaves contain numerous rabbinic signatures and ownership inscriptions, in 18th–19th century Ashkenazic script. Among them:

"הק' יהודא ליב פאללאק"

"הק' יוסף פנחס הלברשטאט"

"הק' יוסף אברהם ליב בהרב המנוח מוהר"ר מענדל..."

"הגאון הגדול המפורסים מוהר"ר אברהם..."

"אברהם דיין בק"ק ברודא נרט"

"RABBINER DR. A. NEUWIRTH"

And a notable inscription: "זה הספר ניתן לי במתנה גמורה מנכדו של המחבר זצ"ל" – "This book was given to me as a complete gift by the grandson of the author, of blessed memory."
