Chen Tov. Prague, 1618-1624

Chen Tov - novellae and sermons according to the weekly Torah portions - comprehensive book in drush and kabbalah by Rabbi Tuvia HaLevi. Rare book. Complete copy.

This book was first printed in 1605, and after a relatively short time, it was printed again in the edition before us. This phenomenon is uncommon for authors from that period. Printing the book took seven years [1618-1624]. On the title page, the author is referred to as among the living, but he apparently passed away slightly before the printing [or while it was in progress] and the title page is a copy from the first edition which was printed in the author's lifetime.

Rabbi Tuvia HaLevi [d. 1618], was a rabbinic leader among the sages of Safed and one of leaders and sages of Israel in the generation preceding that of the Beit Yosef. He was a disciple of the gaon and kabbalist Rabbi Shlomo Sagis, whom he quoted extensively in his book, aside many elucidations by the Ar"i z"l. Responsa from him appear in Shu"t Mahari"t.

4, 2 (should be 1) 356 leaves, 32 cm. The Bibliography of the Hebrew Book lists 356 leaves, it's possible they didn't see the first three pages of introduction, 2-4; fine condition. Aging stains. Few worming perforations in the margins of the last leaves. Magnificent leather binding.
