* Rare and interesting letter [4 lines] entirely handwritten by the author of Imrei Chaim. The gaon Rabbi Akiva Sofer, author of Da'at Sofer of Pressburg signed on this letter. The letter is a receipt for a sum of money received by the ga'avad of Pressburg from the Rebbe. Bucharest, 4 Av, 1944.

[1] leaf graph paper, 7 cm; fine condition. Aging stains.

The Admor Rabbi Chaim Meir Hager [1888-1972] was the fourth Admo"r in the dynasty of Vizhnitz Chassidism - one of the largest Chassidic courts in the world. The Admo"r was among the leaders of Chareidi Jewry, a member of Agudat Yisrael's Council of Torah Sages, and one of those who steered its path. After his father's passing in 1936, he was appointed his successor as Admo"r of Vizhnitz in Grosswardein. When the Nazis invaded Hungary in 1944, he was transferred along with Grosswardein Jewry to a ghetto. The Admo"r desired to avoid working on Shabbat, so he injured himself, and succeeded to convince the Hungarian officers that he be in the village on Shabbat together with his son-in-law Rabbi Yehudah Horowitz of Dzikov, and two other Chassidim who wounded themselves. On Shabbat, the prisoners were sent to Auschwitz. The Admo"r and his three companions were saved in the merit of their Shabbat observance and managed to flee on foot to the border with Romania. These letters are apparently from the period in which the Rebbe was in Romania, where he continued to concern himself with the welfare of rabbinic leaders, as is clear from these letters. He ascended to the Land of Israel in 1947 where he restored Vizhnitz Chassidism, founded Kiyat Vizhnitz in Bnei Brak and established institutions of Torah and benevolence.
