Magen David, by the Rebbe of Tolna. Lviv, 1880. Printed in his lifetime.
Sefer Magen David, Chassidic teachings on the weekly Torah portions. By the renowned wonder-worker, the holy Rabbi David’l, founder of the Tolna Chassidic dynasty and son of the Maggid of Chernobyl. Lviv, 1880.

The holy Rabbi David of Tolna [1808–1882], one of the great Admorim of his time. His court in Vasilkov, and later in Tolna, was among the largest and most prominent of its day. He was famed for his ruach hakodesh (divine inspiration) and was considered a peerless wonder-worker in his generation. Born to the Maggid of Chernobyl, he was named after his maternal grandfather, Rabbi David of Likess, a disciple of the Baal Shem Tov. Upon marriage, he became the son-in-law of Rabbi Yisrael Avraham of Cherny-Ostraha, son of Rabbi Zusha of Anipoli. After his father's passing in 1837, he began leading a Chassidic community in Tolna, which quickly became a major Chassidic center in Ukraine.

As in most copies, the pre-title leaf is lacking. Present here is the publisher's preface and genealogical note (likely included only in select copies).
