The Personal Passover Haggadah of Maran Rabbi Ovadia Yosef; Signature and Glosses in His Handwriting
A sacred and unique Judaica item — the personal Passover Haggadah of the leader of Sephardic Jewry, Maran Rabbi Ovadia Yosef. The book Simchat HaRegel by the Chida [Rabbi Chaim Yosef David Azulai]. In the center of the pages, the text of the Haggadah is printed in large, vocalized letters, surrounded by the Simchat HaRegel commentary. Lviv, [1862].

On the front flyleaf appears Maran’s ornate handwritten signature [4 lines]:
“LaHashem ha'aretz umelo’ah,
hatzab”i Ovadia Yosef,
s”t [safra tinyana – ‘dust and ashes’].”

According to signs of use throughout the pages, and numerous wine stains on the leaves of the Haggadah — dripped from Maran's four cups while he reclined on his royal seat on the Seder night — it is evident that this Haggadah was used by Maran for many years.

Even on the eve of Passover and during Chol HaMoed, Maran continued to study the Haggadah, adorned with the famous commentary of the Chida, and he left his blessing upon it — two fine glosses written in his own holy handwriting.

On leaf 25a, Maran wrote a 3-line gloss (9 words) in his own handwriting; and on leaf 51a, he recorded another substantial gloss — 4 lines, 14 words. Both glosses pertain to the Chida’s commentary, Simchat HaRegel. It appears that these glosses were never printed!

Presented here is a holy and rare historical item of the righteous, from one of the greatest figures of the Jewish nation in all generations. A link in the rare golden chain of “G'dolei HaDor” — the Rambam, Maran the Beit Yosef, Maran the Ben Ish Chai — ascending in sanctity.

The personal Haggadah of Maran the Yabia Omer, from which he read for many years on the Seder night, which — according to the writings of the Ari — is the most exalted and significant night of the year; and upon which he left his blessing — two glosses in his own holy handwriting.
