WWII Scrapbook, Album, USAAF Lot
A variety of items associated with the US flying men of World War II. Includes:1) An impressive scrapbook (dim. 13"x10"x1-1/2") kept by Mrs. Rosalie Rohrbacher mother of LT Herbert Smith, who piloted a B-26. He had 5 battle stars from 50 combat missions and amassed a total of 115 merit points according to a 31 July 1945 newspaper clipping enclosed. Mainly wartime material and ephemera enclosed, with some articles from 1933 California earthquake. A fascinating scrapbook worth exploring. 2) Green photo album (dim. 12"x7"x1-1/2") "Memoirs of Mac Dill Field. Tampa, St. Pete. Clearwater." Approx. 38 pages (both sides) of photographs with captions. Only a few photos missing. Unit was the 960th Engineers? Unclear whose album it was. Great images of Army camp life and Florida.3) Workbook for airplane identification-San Antonio Cadet Center. 124 pages, missing front/back cover. Great photos and specs of all wartime airplanes, friend and foe alike. 4) Framed signed portrait of US pilot Lt. Lewis P. Johnson, who flew the B-17 that SSGT "Snuffy" Smith saved from fire, becoming the first Enlisted man to receive the Medal of Honor. Portrait accompanied by related images. Frame dim: 16"x20". 5) Framed photo print of B24 Liberator "Witchcraft" with history of plane flanked by pair of USAAF patches. 6) 3 framed 8"x10" photos: Photo print of crew of B-17 bomber "Jeri"; Modern photo print of B-26 Marauder "Tondelayo; Photo print of B-17 landing with one wheel at air show. 7) Pair of framed large format original photo prints of B-17 gun crews training in Pyote Texas. 1943. Photos taken a few moments apart from each other.
