The Bismark Bank
Designed by Charles Bailey for J. & E. Stevens Company of Cromwell, Ct. - Mid 1880's. Otto von Bismarck was a conservative German statesman. He was the architect of the unification of Germany in 1871, and, In his role as Chancellor, he put into effect a protectionist policy that had serious commercial ramifications for Germany's trading partners. One such law was the German Tariff of 1879. It imposed duties on agricultural imports into Imperial Germany. The increased import fees on livestock were the most significant. On pigs alone, the duty charge was raised to 25 marks. Bailey must have been influenced by his knowledge of these current events when he created a new toy bank illustrating Bismark popping up from inside the pig. A German schwein (pig) instead of a Trojan horse.
